Friends, old and new, I hope that you are hanging in there. I have been struggling myself with how to meet this moment as both a journalist, creative and parent. None of those things can ever truly be separate from the other and often being a parent overtakes any time or mental head space for the other two to be productive. I am sure, parent or not, all of you feel this pull in multiple directions as the world we have known shifts around us. We truly are all in this together.
With that, I am moving forward a plan I have had for awhile to write more, make more and share more. That also means that some of my content will be a part of a paid subscription model on this platform. So, what will you find here?
Documentary film, personal essays, investigative reporting, commentary, and photography. As the primary caregiver / stay at home parent in my house, the time I have to create is limited and so the time I have to pitch to outlets often being gatekept by a small few in the media world is next to none. So this might be messy, but you’re damn right it will be focused on topics I am passionate about - and I believe worthy of your time.
I hope you’ll stay with me for the free work, and pitch in for the paid pieces. Please engage with me, as I love conversation!
First up will be a documentary series I am completing after years of it being on hold. The good news is while I edit, you have seven episodes to catch up on, if you are so inclined. The first episode will be free.
In the meantime, I want to point you to some other creatives and writing that are helping me to feel somewhat sane or informed:
Sarah Kendzior’s Newsletter - linking to her latest piece. Her work has been prophetic, and now as everything she wrote about has come to pass, her coping mechanisms give me a jolt of hope and peace. Her writing is impeccable.
Abortion, Every Day - Another writer that knows how to read between the lines as it relates to reproductive rights. Jessica has predicted actions taken against bodily autonomy for years.
Inside Medicine - What impact are current events having on the medical community? Dr. Faust, an ER physician and public health expert breaks down what is happening in the world of healthcare.
There are a lot more writers I follow that help keep me informed, but all in small doses folks. I know we are all managing a lot right now, but if you are looking for recommendations. These will get you started.
Thanks for reading! Look for the first episode of my docu-series mentioned above, later today.
